Alfa Romeo Giulia and Abarth 595 have been voted “Best Car 2018” in their respective categories by the readers of “Auto motor und Sport”, repeating last year’s success in this prestige international survey
For the second year in succession, the readers of the famous “Auto, Motor und Sport” specialist magazine have given their opinion in no uncertain terms: in their view, the new Alfa Romeo Giulia is the best medium-class imported car. This is the outcome of the voting procedure for the “Best Car 2018” award. In the 42nd edition of the reader survey, Alfa Romeo Giulia won 22.4 per cent of the votes. What’s more, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the Brand’s first SUV, and the compact Alfa Romeo Giulietta crowned its impressive success by finishing second in their respective categories. And that’s not all: “Auto, Motor und Sport” readers selected Abarth 595 as best car in the “Imported Mini Car” category. The Italian compact sports car won the coveted “Best Car” for the third consecutive year, with the votes of 27.2 percent of readers, and also made it into the first three in the overall Mini Car rankings.
The forty-second edition of the “Best Car” competition had a strong international flavour. Readers of 18 magazines from Europe and beyond assessed a total of 385 models in eleven different categories. “I’m proud to receive this award,” Roberta Zerbi, Head of EMEA Alfa Romeo Brand stated during the ceremony in Stuttgart. “Alfa Romeo Giulia’s success in Germany is extremely significant, proving that our designers and engineers have satisfied the discerning tastes of German car enthusiasts.”

Being named ‘Best Car’ by the German magazine ‘Auto, Motor und Sport’ for three years running is further proof of its exceptional value. Alfa Romeo Giulia
Alongside its distinctively Italian design and lavish standard outfit, the wide range of engines is one of the secrets of Alfa Romeo Giulia’s success. Built entirely in aluminium, they incorporate ground-breaking fuel emission and emission reduction technologies. The 2.2 180 HP AT8 Advanced Efficiency version, for example, combines best-in-class performances with average consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km. The top-of-the-range model, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, on the other hand, is equipped with the 375 kW (510 HP) 2.9 V6 Biturbo petrol engine. This version, supreme embodiment of “Engineering for the Emotions”, boasts a class-topping weight/power ratio – 2.99 kg/HP – thanks to the extensive use of ultra-lightweight materials, such as carbon fibre, for the roof, bonnet, front splitter, rear nolder and side skirt inserts. The weight of the Quadrifoglio version can be further reduced using two components which are available upon request: carbon ceramic brake discs and Sparco seats with a carbon fibre rear structural frame.
With five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test, Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the safest cars in its segment. What’s more, all Alfa Romeo Giulia models thrill with their sporty handling, perfect front-rear weight distribution and excellent weight/power ratio. Depending on the model, the rear-wheel or Alfa Q4 all-wheel drive systems not only deliver stunning sporty performances but are worthy heirs to the Alfa Romeo tradition, with its many historic racing victories.
Abarth 595 enthusiasts can pick from four trim levels – hatchback or convertible – each with a 1.4 T-Jet engine having different power rating, paired with a manual or mechanical robotised gearbox. The full line-up features the 595 (145 HP), the 595 Pista (160 HP), the 595 Turismo (165 HP) and the 595 Competizione (180 HP).
Each trim level of the 595 range has plenty of sporty features, some standard and others optional, to enhance either the performance or the looks of the car. The most interesting include Record Monza Dual Mode exhaust with four tailpipes, front and rear Koni suspensions, Brembo braking system, leather or fabric Sabelt seats, 7-inch UconnectTM infotainment and a wide range of alloy rims. A mechanical self-locking different is available on demand as part of the Performance Pack on the 595 Competizione.
Completing the 595 line-up are two special editions, also available in two versions, convertible or hatchback: the 695 XSR Yamaha and the 695 Rivale. More in detail, the XSR Yamaha fits a 1.4 T-Jet delivering 165 HP, which can be paired with a manual or a robotised mechanical gearbox. Its special standard features include Akrapovič exhaust with carbonfibre tailpipes, Koni rear suspension, red brake callipers, 7-inch Uconnect infotainment system with Mirror Link, leather seats and carbon-fibre mirror caps. A carbon-fibre dashboard is available on demand on the XSR Yamaha.
The 695 Rivale is the most recent addition to the line-up. It fits a 1.4 T-Jet engine delivering 180 HP and can also be paired with manual gearbox or robotised mechanical gearbox.
The 695 Rivale sports a special two-colour blue-grey livery and an aquamarine “floating line”. Standard equipment includes Akrapovič exhaust with carbon-fibre tailpipes, Brembo braking system with black brake callipers, front and rear Koni suspensions, 7-inch UconnectTM infotainment with Mirror Link, blue leather interiors and inserts on the steering wheel and carbon-fibre dashboard and gear knob (the latter on the manual version only). On demand are mechanical self-locking differential and Mogano Pack. With the latter, the interior carbon inserts are replaced with real wood inserts.
