The best way to keep your car nice and new looking is to do regular vacuuming and dusting of the interior. Although this is easy maintenance to do once or twice a month surface cleaning is not enough. You need to do interior auto detailing at least two or three times a year, especially the upholstery, to keep it really looking nice. This is something that you can do yourself but you can also take it and have it professionally done, which can cost hundreds of dollars.
Vacuuming
This is an important part of interior auto detailing and all you need to do a great job is a good vacuum cleaner with attachments. Depending on how long it has been since you have purchased the car it should not take more than thirty minutes or less to do a thorough job. The two attachments that you will need are the dust brush and crevice attachment. The crevice attachment should be plastic and not metal and in good condition. If it is metal or not in good condition it could scratch or damage your leather or vinyl upholstery. The crevice attachment is used to reach under and between the seats and into the tight seams and around the seat belts. Use the dust brush tool for vacuuming the vents, dash, and console. To get into the vents and cracks greatly you can use an interior auto detailing brush.
Before you start to vacuum make sure that you take out the floor mats and shake them so any loose dirt comes off. Use the hose end with no attachment or the upholstery attachment to vacuum the mats. Make sure that you use the crevice tool for vacuuming around the seat tracks. The door panels can be vacuumed using the dust brush. Once done work on the other area, making sure that you vacuum the carpet around the brake and gas pedals.
Shampooing
When you start to shampoo your carpets and floor mats this can take two to three hours but before you can start, the areas must be completely vacuumed. If there are any heavily soiled areas, spray with a cleaner and let sit for at least 15 minutes before you scrub them. Spray the carpets and floor mats a little at time and use an upholstery brush to clean the carpets and mats, using a circular motion. Have a small bucket of water nearby so you can dip your brush into it but do not get the areas too wet. Rinse the carpet and mats using a damp terry cloth towel, making sure you rinse and wring out your towel often. Use the vacuum to get the rest of the cleaner out and let dry completely overnight.
