More precisely, the paint is wearing off and getting damaged due to the piece of equipment that folds the soft top rubbing against the roll bar.
One owner realized this was happening after they had the soft top down only a couple of times. Closer inspection showed there was some lateral play in the soft top frame. Closing it upwards causes “the frame [to] rub if it isn’t lifted perfectly even left to right.” Additional forum members and owners chimed in claiming similar experiences.
