Don’t Believe The Badge, This Is Really America’s New VW Tiguan

It’s been almost a year since the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan was revealed. Deliveries are taking place globally, and yet American consumers are still stuck with the old model. What gives? Well, the US isn’t getting the new Tiguan, but rather a different SUV called the Tayron. The German automaker has now confirmed it will debut on October 10, via a teaser posted on its social media channels.

A few teaser images of the Tayron give us an idea of what it will look like. As with the latest Volkswagens, the crossover will boast a rear lightbar with gloss black detailing and an illuminated logo, below which you’ll find the Tayron model name in black. While it’s too early to tell, the new model seems to share several similarities with the new Tiguan and facelifted T-Cross models.

A Bigger, Fancier Tiguan That Volkswagen Describes As “Sophisticated”

Based on earlier spy shots, the family resemblance continues at the front, with the fascia sporting the three-bar VW corporate grille, sculpted headlights, and a prominent lower inlet with additional lighting and details. Volkswagen hasn’t shared much about the new SUV except for the caption, which reads, “Introducing the all-new Tayron. Engineered in the heart of Wolfsburg, the complete new model is a sophisticated all-rounder.”

In other markets, the Tayron will be positioned above the new Tiguan and the range-topping Touareg, a luxury SUV that is no longer offered in the United States. While it’s based on the MQB platform (like the Tiguan), the Tayron will be larger. “The increase in dimensions for the next Tiguan will also be reflected on the next Tayron. We want to keep a similar differentiation in size between the two,” said Karl-Heinx Hell, VW’s head of engineering for mid- to full-size models, last year.

Tayron Is Coming To America – But As A Tiguan

The Tayron will eventually replace the Tiguan in the United States. The current model is sold exclusively in Allspace guise, which affords more cargo and passenger space. The Tayron will be the same to keep offering American buyers the size they desire. The Tayron is expected to spawn a coupe version known as the Tayron X, which may be offered in the US, much like the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport.

It remains to be seen what will power the Tayron when it arrives in America (as a rebadged Tiguan), but it’s safe to assume it will gain motivation from a selection of electrified engines. This includes a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter engine and a pair of plug-in hybrids, one of which will offer up to 268 horsepower. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the US-spec model will share these engines. We’ll find out next month.
