The United States has one of the most extensive new car markets of any country in the world, with options ranging from small EVs like the Fiat 500e to full-sized trucks such as the Ford F-150, but now and again, we miss out on great cars, like the Subaru WRX Sportswagon.
Introduced a few years ago, the sporty compact wagon was never destined for our shores. But now, Subaru has decided to bring the desirable family car to Mexico, and that has Subaru fans foaming at the mouth in anticipation of what could (but likely won’t) come to America.
What We’re Missing Out On
According to The Drive, 2025 WRX Sportswagon presales have already started in Mexico, with the vehicle reaching dealerships later this year. Like the WRX sedan we can purchase here in the States, it is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer engine. It develops a respectable 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

As expected from a sporty Subaru, power is sent to all four wheels via the brand’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system. While customers can specify a dull CVT, the big news here is that customers can select a manual transmission. Per the report, the manual will be the most affordable WRX Sportswagon in the lineup.

No Word On Whether It Will Come To The US
Mexican customers can choose from three trim levels, starting with the WRX High, priced at $48,400. The range-topping model is the WRX tS CVT, which will cost customers approximately $54,300. That’s much more expensive than the US-spec WRX Sedan, starting at $32,735.

Instead, the outgoing Wilderness will be sold alongside the sixth generation of the popular Forester.
It’s worth noting that the WRX Sportswagon isn’t a new vehicle and has been on sale for some time in several markets, such as Australia, Japan, and Indonesia. Subaru sees a gap in the Mexican market, so it would be interesting to see if there’s a business case for it in the USA. CarBuzz has contacted Subaru of America to find out whether the Sportswagon is in the cards for the US, but the automaker would not be drawn into speculation on future products.

Yet Another Performance Car We Can’t Have
So close and yet so far, the Subaru WRX Sportswagon is one of several cool cars that American gearheads have been denied. This includes the Audi RS4 Avant and BMW M3 Touring (other cool wagons), the Toyota GR Yaris, and countless European sports cars and hot hatches, such as the Renault Clio V6 and Alpine A110, to name just a few.
While there’s plenty we’ve missed out on, there is plenty to look forward to. BMW plans to introduce the new M5 in both sedan and Touring forms, which will please numerous enthusiasts. That being said, it would be nice to see more affordable alternatives (like the Sportswagon) reach our shores.
