Maserati Confirms Long-Term Commitment To Formula E

It’s been over a year since Maserati partnered with Vivid Racing to create Maserati MSG Racing. As the ninth Formula E season is well underway, the carmaker hosted a roundtable to discuss its performance and future in the sport.

Giovanni Tommaso Sgro, head of Maserati Corse, the brand’s racing division, led the discussion alongside drivers Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther. The team recently scored its first victory in the sport during the 2023 Jakarta E-Prix, marking the brand’s first single-seater victory since 1957.

Before this week’s race in Portland, OR, Sgro talked about how important it was for Maserati to be the first Italian carmaker to compete in the sport. Especially as this aligns with its goal to offer electric versions of its cars by 2025 before going fully electric in 2030. As such, Sgro stated that Maserati plans to compete in Formula E long term.

While part of its Formula E efforts is to compete at a high level in a steadily growing sport, its fanbase is also a major contributing factor. Sgro stated that fans of electrified racing aren’t only traditional car enthusiasts. Its fanbase is also largely comprised of tech enthusiasts, which Maserati sees as an untapped customer base.

As such, its participation in the sport allows the customer to reach a new audience which it plans to serve with vehicles like the recently released all-electric GT Folgore and with upcoming EVs such as the Grecale Folgore.

Given its electrification plans, Maserati’s long-term commitment to the sport is not surprising. However, the Italian marque still plans to compete in other areas of motorsport, such as with its recently unveiled MC20 GT2 and the limited production track-only Project 64. These efforts signal that the carmaker has not only returned to its racing roots but is serious about sticking around.
