Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy entails tackling the mobility challenges of today with a vision for tomorrow
New ‘Romancing Gemstones’ performance event expresses this vision via artists inspired by gemstones related to culture, art and design
Event to take place September 1 and 2 at DDP Oullim Square/ Under the Miraero Bridge

Kia will present its brand design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’, in an entirely original and unique format during a performance event at Seoul Light DDP  2023 Autumn.

The event will feature six performance artists, each displaying a routine inspired by gemstones related to culture, art and design. Through their chosen medium of sound, light or movement, the performers will pose artistic questions which can only be answered by each audience member’s own interpretation, creating a narrative of unlimited potential.

The performances will take place on the evenings of September 1 and 2 and the stage will be directly outside the famous silver structure of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, in Oullim Square under the Miraero Bridge.

On September 1 at 6 p.m., Milan-based sound designer and drummer Missing Ear, dance, music and art choreographer Lee Yanghee, and graphic design cultural collective OTOLAB will be displaying their audio-visual projects and experimental live performances.

On September 2 at 5:30 p.m., Nahzam Sue of the band Sultan of the Disco will recall his creative story as a producer and performer through a studio-style stage production, English singer-songwriter, producer and model Alewya will perform live in front of her own animated LED artwork display, and BAFTA-nominated UK composer, producer and DJ Afrodeutsche will entertain onlookers.

In addition to two nights of artistic performance, Kia will participate in the Seoul Light DDP Media Facade, running from August 31 until September 10. Embracing the inspiration and memories gathered by communicating with numerous visitors worldwide, Kia will present “Opposites United – Internal Journey of Communication” to engage with visitors anew. Kia Design’s intent will be expressed as a digitally drawn grand journey, integrated with “Digital Nature”, the main theme of Seoul Light DDP 2023, and displayed in dazzling scale across the 222-meter wide canvas of the DDP itself.

Kia Global Design Center has previously communicated its vision through public exhibitions and events at the likes of Gwangju Biennale 2021, Busan Motor Show 2022, and Seoul Light DDP 2022 Winter, as well as bespoke Opposites United Exhibitions DDP and Milan in 2022 and 2023 respectively. These efforts were rewarded recently with a Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2023 for Kia’s creative exhibitions and events to communicate ‘Opposites United’.
